Red Rock Loop Road

Discover Sedona’s Most Beautiful Red Rock Journey

Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop Road offer one of the most scenic drives in Sedona, while providing visitors with a breathtaking journey through the heart of the region’s world-famous red rock landscapes. Winding through dramatic canyon country, high desert terrain, and some of Sedona’s most iconic scenery, the Red Rock Loop is a favorite destination for sightseeing, photography, leisurely drives, and outdoor exploration.

Unlike Sedona’s busier commercial corridors, Red Rock Loop Road immerses visitors in a quieter and more natural setting where towering sandstone cliffs, rolling mesas, and expansive desert vistas dominate the landscape. Around every curve, travelers are rewarded with stunning views of massive red rock formations rising above juniper forests, open grasslands, and rugged canyon terrain.

The route is especially popular for its panoramic viewpoints, peaceful atmosphere, and constantly changing perspectives of Sedona’s geological wonders. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of towering rock spires, sculpted canyon walls, broad desert valleys, and some of the most photographed scenery in northern Arizona.

The drive is particularly spectacular during sunrise and sunset when the surrounding sandstone formations glow in brilliantly illuminated shades of crimson, orange, and gold. Photographers, nature lovers, and scenic drive enthusiasts often consider Red Rock Loop Road one of the most beautiful drives in Arizona.

Beyond its stunning scenery, the route provides access to hiking trails, wildlife viewing opportunities, historic ranchlands, and quiet wilderness areas that showcase Sedona’s rich natural heritage. Whether exploring by car, bicycle, or on foot, visitors experience a landscape that feels both vast and intimate, offering a true connection to the beauty of Arizona’s red rock country.

Today, Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop Road remain among Sedona’s premier scenic drives and are considered essential experiences for anyone seeking to discover the region’s extraordinary landscapes.

History of Red Rock Loop Road

Unlike Sedona’s natural rock formations, Red Rock Loop Road is a modern roadway created to provide access through some of the region’s most scenic landscapes. While the surrounding red rock scenery was formed by nature over hundreds of millions of years, the road itself evolved through decades of settlement, ranching, transportation development, and tourism growth.

The landscape surrounding Red Rock Loop Road began forming approximately 250 to 300 million years ago, when layers of sand, mud, and sediment accumulated across ancient deserts, rivers, and shallow inland seas. Over time, these sediments hardened into sandstone and were later uplifted as part of the Colorado Plateau. Wind, water, and erosion eventually sculpted the cliffs, mesas, buttes, and canyon walls visible today.

Long before roads existed, Indigenous peoples including the Sinagua, Yavapai, and Apache traveled throughout the area, utilizing the region’s natural resources and maintaining deep cultural connections to the landscape. During the late 1800's and early 1900's, ranchers and settlers established homesteads throughout the Verde Valley and Sedona region. Primitive wagon roads and ranch access routes gradually developed to connect remote properties, agricultural operations, and neighboring communities.

As Sedona grew into a tourism destination during the mid-20th century, local governments and transportation planners improved these early roads to accommodate increasing visitor traffic. Portions of today's Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop Road were expanded and modernized to provide access to scenic viewpoints, recreational areas, trailheads, and residential communities while preserving the area's natural character.

The roadway continues to be maintained through cooperation between Yavapai County, the U.S. Forest Service, and local agencies responsible for protecting the surrounding public lands and scenic resources. Today, Red Rock Loop Road serves as one of Sedona’s most beloved scenic routes, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the region while preserving access to its remarkable natural landscapes.
