The sandstone formations visible from Dry Creek Overlook began forming approximately 250 to 300 million years ago, when vast deserts, rivers, and shallow inland seas covered much of present-day northern Arizona. Layers of sand, mud, and sediment accumulated over time, eventually hardening into the colorful sandstone formations that characterize Sedona today.
