The landscape surrounding Encinoso Picnic Area was formed over millions of years through the same geological processes that created Sedona’s renowned Red Rock Country. Approximately 250 to 300 million years ago, layers of sand, silt, and sediment accumulated across ancient desert environments and shallow inland seas. Over time, these deposits hardened into sandstone and other sedimentary rock layers that were later uplifted as part of the Colorado Plateau.

Wind, water, and erosion gradually sculpted the towering cliffs, mesas, and canyon walls visible throughout the area today. The distinctive red coloration of the surrounding formations comes from iron oxide, which gives Sedona’s sandstone its famous crimson and orange hues.
